What others are saying about Mike Harris

Our hometown paper, the Argus Courier supports Mike Harris. Following is a link to their editorial analysis

"In his two terms in office, City Councilman Mike Harris has effectively demonstrated the qualities that make a good council member. His two years of effective service on the Sonoma County Transportation Authority demonstrated his active commitment to ensuring that Highway 101 will be widened through Petaluma, that the long-delayed Rainier interchange will eventually be built and that Petaluma will continue to get its fair share of transportation dollars.

Harris is bright, level-headed and a good listener who has earned a reputation for accessibility and responsiveness to his constituents. He helped lead the city to survey its economic needs seven years ago, which showed that Petaluma was “leaking” many millions of dollars in sales tax revenues to nearby communities. Since then, he’s been a strong proponent of strengthening and diversifying the city’s economy and growing its tax base.

Notwithstanding the last two years, in which his input has been largely ignored by the majority, Harris has a reputation for working collaboratively with other council members and understands the importance of building consensus to reach goals for the good of the community."

"Among the nine council candidates, Harris, a widely respected two-term incumbent, understands Petaluma's budget challenges, its economic development needs and, especially, its opportunities now that work is done on the general plan update and an extension of the urban growth boundary, which also appears on the Nov. 2 ballot."

Letter to the editor that appeared in a recent edition of the Press Democrat

EDITOR: I ran against Mike Harris for Petaluma City Council in 1998 and supported candidates against him in 2002 and 2006. Over the years, he has proven to be an effective councilman and has done a commendable job as chairman of the transit and technology committees.

On the Technology Committee, he has protected Petaluma Community Access. He has protected seniors by supporting our mobile home rent control ordinance. He recently reaffirmed this, telling me he would not support the park owners request to vacancy decontrol. He voted to have projects such as Regency and Deer Creek come before the council for final approval instead of letting a committee approve these projects.

Editor: I will be supporting Mike Harris in the upcoming City Council elections. As a former member of the Technology & Telecommunications Advisory Committee, I was able to see Mike up close and personal while I was serving on this committee with him. Mike served as chairman of this committee and continues to serve with passion. Mike has a unique understanding of technology and how it is necessary to leverage technology in order to better our community. This service, coupled with his business background, make him somebody I respect and trust on the City Council. Please join me in supporting Mike Harris for a seat on the Petaluma City Council.
